COURSE OVERVIEW
“OFFSHORE DRILLING” is aimed at imparting the participants with the knowledge of Basic Petroleum Geology, Offshore Operations and Processes. Upon completion of this course, participants should be capable of mastering the following topics:
- Basic Petroleum Geology (understand basic geology and petroleum concepts)
- Offshore Well Construction Process (outlining the stages of planning and drilling a well and list the tools required for each stage).
- Offshore Drilling Rig Types and Application (a broad overview of the types of offshore drilling units in use today and the variables that determine rig selection).
- Drilling Rig Components and their Functions. (understanding the components of a drilling rig and their purposes, related drilling operations, etc.)
- Bottom Founded Offshore Rigs e.g. swamp rigs, jack-up rigs, etc. (recognizing types, descriptions and applications)
- Offshore Drilling BHA (discussions on the features, types and application),
- Offshore QHSE, Drilling Fluids, Casing, Cementing & Cement Evaluation (highlighting the importance and benefits of good offshore QHSE standards, wellbore fluids, casing and cement in a well)
- Offshore Drilling from a Floating Rig (drillships, semisubmersibles – understanding the differences and applications)
- Anchoring, Dynamic Positioning, Motion Compensation (principles and applications)
- ROVs, Supply Boats, Personnel Transfer (guidance on offshore vehicle logistics and supply)
- Directional Drilling and Relief Wells (a review of directional drilling concepts, ERD wells, etc.)
- Offshore Oil & Gas production systems, pipelines, transportation & storage (an intro to subsea production systems, FPSOs, mooring systems, pipeline dampers, flowline pipelines, risers, etc.)
- Offshore well control principles and equipment (identifying BOP components, their use, and the control systems for surface and subsea BOPs)
- Offshore well completion & testing (discussing well completion design & operations, formation evaluation from well testing, cuttings, cores, logs etc.)
This course was designed by Dr. Princewill Ohia and assisted by Dr. Okereke. All staff associated with this course, will act as facilitators for the discussion boards.

None.
TIME COMMITMENT
1 – 2 hours per week.

GRADING SCHEME
All activities are due to be completed by November, 29th 2018, 22:30 GMT. You’ll be graded on weekly activities (100% weight in final score) You need to score 80% or higher to pass the course and receive a certificate. You can check your progress by selecting the “Progress” tab
